A 17-year-old boy died after being found unconscious in a hallway at New Prairie High School.
First Responders were sent to the school around 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 23, according to the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department.
The student was taking part in an intramural basketball game before he was found in the hallway.
CPR was initiated and continued by emergency responders upon their arrival.
The student was rushed to LaPorte Hospital where lifesaving efforts continued, but were not successful.
New Prairie staff members and school administrators came to the hospital and met with a number of students who came to the hospital.
At this time there is no foul play suspected.
The LaPorte County Coroner is working on the case and has arranged for an autopsy to be completed on Tuesday that will help determine the cause of death.
Dr. Paul White, superintendent of New Prairie United School Corporation, issued the following statement:
“We are very saddened at the loss of this student. The New Prairie family is mourning his passing and we hope and pray that his family will take comfort in knowing the strength of all of our students and staff stand with them in their loss.” Dr. White and New Prairie High School Principal Jen Sass have initiated a crisis plan to help aid with students as they arrive at school Tuesday morning. Counselors as well as local ministers will be on hand at the school throughout the day Tuesday.”
White is expected to have additional comments on Tuesday.
