It’s no secret that meth is a problem in Indiana. The question is how to handle it. State Representative Ben Smaltz says lawmakers have tried a few things already concerning the drug’s chief ingredient, pseudoephedrine, which is present in certain cold medicines. Smaltz wants to make the drug available by prescription only, a move that critics say will punish law-abiding citizens by forcing them to spend time – and money – at the doctor’s office just so they can treat common allergies or a cold. The idea will be brought up in next year’s Legislative Session, and it seems to have some strong Republican support.
