Warsaw Schools see slight uptick in enrollment

WARSAW — Public school officials watch demographic trends closely for both short-term and long-term purposes, and the falling birth rate in recent years across much of the Midwest has been reason for concern.

Warsaw Community Schools Superintendent Dr. David Hoffert predicted a decrease in enrollment, but that didn’t happen.

The newest enrollment count showed a slight reversal of what had been expected.

Hoffert didn’t have specific numbers immediately available and the state has not yet posted an update.

“We were expecting a decrease in enrollment,” Hoffert said. “Really — our numbers stayed even.”

Hoffert pointed to two reasons for the change.

“We know there have been housing projects here inside the community … so we’re definitely seeing an increase of people moving into the community and schools being one of those reasons.”

Enrollment was one of several issues Hoffert discussed in this week’s In the Know, the public affairs show you can hear this weekend on Kensington Digital Media stations this weekend.

Other issues of interest discussed in the show include the widespread national trend of school threats, the district’s expanding dual language immersion program and repairs involving the high school pool.
