Triton’s head football coach has resigned after allegations that he had an inappropriate relationship with a former student.

Triton Superintendent Jeremy Riffle announced the resignation of Zach Whittaker in a letter to the community earlier this week.

In the letter, Riffle said administrators became aware of a possible relationship between Whittaker and a former student and that Whittaker was placed on administrative leave.

He resigned soon afterward.

Riffle said parents, staff and students can be certain that Triton will take all steps necessary to safeguard the well-being of those under the district’s supervision and that “any form of harmful conduct toward our students will not be tolerated.”

He said Indiana State Police are investigating the issue but declined further comment.

Athletic Director Rodney Younis stepped in to serve as the interim coach and oversaw the team last Friday when they won their sixth game of the season.

Younis coached the football team prior to Whittaker’s arrival in that role two years ago.

“We’re hoping they can bond together on such a sour note and finish off the season well,” Riffle said.
