Times Union – Spring classes at Kosciusko Community YMCA will run from April 11 through May 29.
Classes for youth will include swim lessons, youth fitness and gymnastics classes for all ages. Registration for spring classes starts for everyone March 28, according to a press release from the YMCA.
Classes that promote healthy living include group exercise and indoor group cycling, classes for older adults and water aerobics in both the warm water and lap pools. Adult classes are included with a Y membership. The Y also is offering several events for all ages this spring, so see the welcome center to sign up.
On Friday from 6 to 8 p.m., there will be a March Madness Tourney viewing party free for teens ages 13 to 18. On April 15, from 6 to 8:30 p.m., teens are invited to join in on a free 3-on-3 basketball tournament. On May 13, 6 to 8:30 p.m., teens will have a free movie night.
The Y also will offer “Girls on the Go” again on Mondays, April 11 to May 29, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., for girls ages 10 to 17 to train together to run a community 5K. They will be physically active together, engage in conversations and develop a support system while they prepare for the race.
New this winter for active older adults, the Y has pickleball Fridays from 1 to 3 p.m. It is free to Y members and open to all ages.
An adult 3-on-3 basketball league for teams of six players ages 18 and up will be offered on Thursday nights starting March 24. Contact Zane Gard at zgard@kcymca.org if interested.
The Y will offer two adult Spanish classes starting April 11. Beginner Spanish on Mondays from 6 to 7 p.m. will be a basic course offering introductory Spanish for adults and Intermediate will be offered on Mondays, 7:15 to 8:30 p.m. for those with experience learning Spanish. Both classes are tailored to the needs of participants. The class will learn to listen, speak, read and write while gaining the skills to connect to the Spanish-speaking members of the community, according to the press release. The class meets on Mondays, April 11 to May 23, in multi-purpose room 2.
To support those going through cancer and their caregivers, the Y is hosting “Kathy’s Cancer Conversations,” a volunteer-led cancer support group meeting on the second Monday of each month from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the Parkview Center for Healthy Living. On April 11, they’ll hear from an oncology-trained dietitian about using food to fight cancer. On May 9, the topic will be “Learning to Calm Your Mind.”
CPR classes will be offered April 19 and May 17 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. If someone needs CPR certification for a job or wants to be prepared to handle an emergency, they can sign up for this American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR class. The class will teach adult, child and infant CPR and AED use, but does not include first-aid. This three-hour class provides a two-year certification. There is a cost for participation and certification.
The Y and Parkview Health will offer free A1C tests, which help determine if a person is pre-diabetic, in the Parkview Center for Healthy Living in the YMCA lobby April 28 from 6 to 9 a.m. The Y also offers a Diabetes Prevention class to keep it from advancing into diabetes.
