It’s probably the last thing you want to hear, but the Indiana Department of Transportation is gearing up for winter weather.
Governor Mike Pence has declared this week Winter Weather Preparedness Week in Indiana.
As a result, INDOT has been stockpiling more than 225,000 tons of salt so far, with more deliveries on the way.
Last winter, INDOT deployed 211,000 tons of salt and more than 2.8-million gallons of salt brine on state and federal highways to fight snow and ice buildups.
INDOT has also bought 72 new slow plows and 12 new tow plows, to add to their fleet of more than 1,000 vehicles. Some of those new vehicles can plow two lanes at the same time.
INDOT will also be posting winter preparedness tips to social media all week; just look for #INDOTWinterOps on Facebook and Twitter.
