It took about eight hours, but a man is behind bars after he tripped a burglary alarm at a home in southern Elkhart County.
The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department received the alarm at about 4:30 a.m. Wednesday in the 12000 block of C.R. 52 near Syracuse, according to the Elkhart Truth.
Officers discovered a suspect barricaded inside the home when they arrived. Everyone inside the home had been able to escape safely, and it was just the one suspect in the home.
Deputies didn’t know if he was armed, so they took their time getting him out because it wasn’t known if he had a weapon. Finally, at about 1 p.m. Wednesday, the standoff ended with the suspect in custody and no one hurt.
Roads were blocked for about a mile away from the scene. Officers from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department‘s Emergency Services Unit, Indiana State Police, Syracuse Police Department, and other agencies staged in the area of C.R. 33 and U.S. 6. Area roads were re-opened when the standoff ended.
