Today, we remember the man who’s most notably famous for four words. “I have a dream.” Members of the Committee to Commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will host the community celebration today at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Retired Brooklyn Dodger Carl Erskine will be the featured guest speaker for the event. Erskine was a teammate and friend of Jackie Robinson, who broke through MLB’s longstanding unwritten rule barring African Americans from playing.
Among many other accolades, Erskine also went on to be a champion for Special Olympics after he personally witnessed struggles with prejudice with his own son, Jimmy, born with Down syndrome. The public is welcome to attend and the event is free.
