A Texas man was arrested in connection with a Warsaw crash that injured five people in 2015.
29-year-old Eric Rodriguez is facing charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated causing a serious bodily injury. The Times Union reports his vehicle collided with a van in June of 2015 at the intersection of Detroit Street and U.S. 30 in Warsaw, but the long path to his arrest took a detour through the federal prison system.
Though a warrant was issued for his arrest in February of 2016, he had just finished a 22-month prison sentence for trying to smuggle undocumented immigrants into the U.S.
Kosciusko County Prosecutor Dan Hampton tells the Times Union they will generally wait for someone to finish serving their sentence in another state before extraditing them back to Indiana.
Rodriguez refused a field sobriety test after the June 2015 crash, but later had his blood drawn and was found to be .13– over the legal limit of .08. He’s facing separate charges in another drunk driving incident in Silver Lake and has been previously convicted of driving while intoxicated in Texas.
