The Postal Service processing center in South Bend is now expected to close sometime next year. The South Bend center had been set to close this past February, with its work being shifted to a Fort Wayne processing center. Postal Service spokeswoman Mary Dando says the agency hasn't yet released a schedule for the consolidation, but that it is set to happen sometime in 2015. The Postal Service has estimated 35 to 60 jobs at the South Bend center could be affected by the consolidation. Dando tells the South Bend Tribune that the agency will try to find reassignment opportunities for workers and some might retire. Postal workers union local president Rick Dainelli says he remains worried about mail delivery being slowed by the consolidation.
