Two LaPorte County Deputies were taken to the hospital after they helped tried to rescue two dogs from a house fire.
The blaze happened ariound 2:40 p.m. CDT on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at a home in the 1900 block of East County Road 150 North.
Deputy Andrew Morse and Deputy Kristina Wimmer were the first to arrive and reported that there was smoke coming from the home, according to the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office.
Both deputies found one of the home’s residents near the front door with two dogs that were unconscious. The deputies removed the dogs from the front of the home.
Deputy Morse, who is a K-9 handler that has received training in canine CPR, began resuscitation efforts on German Shepherd while he gave direction to Deputy Wimmer who began resuscitation efforts on the second dog, described as a Labrador mix.
No one was home when the fire was reported. A pet cat perished in the fire, three cats were found safe inside the home.
Both canines were placed into Deputy Wimmer’s squad car and rushed to All Creature Features veterinary service on US 35 near Kingsbury, Indiana.
Once at the veterinary service it was determined that the German Shepherd had died however the Labrador mix was stabilized and remains under the care of the veterinarian at the time of this release.
Following the call both Deputy Wimmer and Deputy Morse were scene the emergency room at La Porte Hospital after they reported suffering symptoms of smoke inhalation. Both deputies were cleared by medical staff and returned to duty later in the shift.
The cause of the fire was not immediately determined and was not believed to be suspicious. No one was home when the fire was reported. A pet cat perished in the fire, three cats were found safe inside the home.
