Elkhart’s electrical network is getting an upgrade.
The electrical system that Indiana-Michigan Power maintains is decades-old. Starting this week, I&M is starting the process of rebuilding that network along with about two-miles of transmission lines.
The $43 million project includes replacing cables, transformers, and adding 15 new underground vaults. In addition to re-routing and rehab, I&M hopes this improves service reliability in Elkhart.
Underground network rebuilding in Fort Wayne and Muncie is already underway and recently finished in South Bend.
Some streets will need to be dug up during the rebuild, including Third, Main, and Jackson Streets, along with Jackson Boulevard.
