The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles has now begun sending claim forms to 180,000 residents overcharged by the agency. The state owes around $29 million in excise tax refunds, plus interest, to about 3.5 percent of Indiana residents who have registered vehicles since 2004. Everyone eligible for a refund will receive a claim form in the mail. Claims are expected to be processed within 30 days of receipt. The overcharge stems from how the BMV calculates the excise tax on vehicles. m error was discovered during manual data entry.
