CoreCivic will not be building an Immigrations and Customs Enforcement detention center in Elkhart County.
County Commissioner Mike Yoder made the announcement on Facebook Monday morning that the application for the detention center was being pulled and they would not be pursuing Elkhart County as a location for the facility going forward.
The facility would have cost $100 million to build and would have been built along County Road 7 near the Elkhart County Landfill. It would have housed up to 1,200 undocumented immigrants.
Both Elkhart Mayor Tim Neese and Goshen Mayor Jeremy Stutsman put out statements late last week opposing the proposed center, adding their voices to many Elkhart County residents vocal about their opposition of the facility.
The Elkhart County Plan Commission had been set to vote on the company’s rezoning request for the project on Feb. 8.
