An Indianapolis Colts linebacker is dead after he was hit by a suspected drunk driver on Interstate 70.
The crash happened shortly before 4 a.m. Sunday on the westbound lanes of I-70 just west of Holt Road. The Indy Star reports 26-year-old Edwin Jackson and 54-year-old Jeffrey Monroe of Avon were reportedly standing next to a stopped vehicle on the emergency shoulder. It’s believed Jackson had become ill and Monroe, a ride-sharing operator, pulled over and got out to help Jackson, according to police.
A black Ford F-150 went onto the shoulder and hit Jackson and Monroe. One of the victims ended up in the middle of the highway, and a state trooper that had arrived on the scene accidentally hit that victim, though it’s not mentioned which victim was hit.
The driver of the pickup truck, 37-year-old Alex Cabrera Gonsales of Indianapolis, tried to flee the scene on foot, but was tracked down on the ramp to Holt Road by the responding officer. He’s facing initial charges of driving intoxicated and driving without a license and is in Marion County Jail.
It is with a heavy heart that we share the loss of one of our own.
Edwin Jackson always brought a smile to our locker room and the community. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.
