Women’s Care Center issues warning if it can’t open next to planned abortion clinic

Women’s Care Center officials are warning the city of South Bend to be careful what they wish for.

In a stern letter sent to city officials this week, the anti-abortion rights group warned city leaders that, if they don’t grant its rezoning request for a home next door to a planned abortion clinic, a “more confrontational group” might step forward.

The South Bend Tribune has learned that group is The Apostolate of Divine Mercy. St. Joseph County Auditor Mike Mamann told the newspaper that anti-abortion rights group wanted to buy the home on Lincolnway and engaged Women’s Care Center in a bidding war for it.

The house was sold to Women’s Care Center for $130,000, nearly double its market value. A day after Mayor Pete Buttigieg vetoed rezoning, an attorney for The Apostoate of Divine Mercy wanted to buy the property, conditional on winning rezoning.

The group had an office next to Women’s Pavilion, which closed in 2016 after Dr. Ulrich Klopfer came under fire and eventually had his medical license revoked.
The house would sit next to Whole Woman’s Health Alliance, which continues to seek approval to open an abortion clinic.
The South Bend Common Council could override Mayor Buttigieg’s veto if six of the nine council members vote to do so. No public comment will be allowed before Monday night’s meeting, where the vote is expected to take place.
