The Warsaw Community Schools Board of Trustees has authorized the use of metal detectors to check students and their personal effects.
It’s part of a program Governor Holcomb set in motion when he made handheld metal detectors available to schools statewide– one for every 250 students.
Warsaw Community Schools is preparing to implement these safety devices at all buildings within the district. Only school personnel who have been trained in the usage of metal detectors, law enforcement officers assigned to the school corporation, or school resource officers will be operating the metal detectors under the direction of the administration.
Searches will be carried out if there is due cause for suspicion and in randomized searches similar to the current drug testing policy at Warsaw Schools. The searches could include staff, students, and guests on school property.
