Warsaw City Council heard an update Tuesday on the Market Street road reconstruction project.
Jeremy Skinner, city planner, presented the information and said an open forum meeting will be Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. at city hall for Market Street property owners to learn about the project.
Skinner said the city has been working with local, state and federal partners to reconstruct Market Street from Argonne Road to Hickory Street.
“With our various partners we have divided the Market Street reconstruction project into two phases, the first of which will begin in 2015,” Skinner said.
The intent of the project is to rehabilitate Market Street while providing a number of improvements.
The city has applied for and received more than $2.3 million in grants in order to complete both phases of the $3.6 million reconstruction project.
Warsaw will start phase one of the project this spring. Phase one will start at Argonne Road and stop short of the Bronson Street intersection.
The reconstruction will provide two lanes of vehicular travel and space for on-street parking, while incorporating pedestrian and cycling infrastructure.
As part of the reconstruction, Market Street will be widened to allow for on-street parking along the south side, a new sidewalk will be replaced on the north side, a side path will be constructed from Krebs Trail Head to Bronson Street on the south side, decorative street lights will be installed, and underground storm water improvements will be made throughout the project.
All of the proposed road and infrastructure improvements will be made within the existing Market Street right of way and the project will result in some trees being removed along the corridor.
In conjunction with the project, the city will work with community partners to plant flowering street trees along the project corridor. This phase is expected to last approximately 180 days from the start of construction and will result in various road closures. The city will work with local residents to coordinate access during construction.
Engineering of phase two of the project is tentatively scheduled to start this year with an anticipated construction timeframe between July 2018 and July 2019.
In addition to the Market Street phase one starting construction this year, Warsaw also will be reconstructing Mariner Drive from Husky Trail to North Pointe Drive and completing the bid letting for the Husky Trail project in November.
The city has worked with partners in receiving an additional $3 million in grant funds in order to complete the Husky Trail and Mariner Drive projects.
