Police confirm one student was killed when a school bus was hit by a truck towing a trailer on U.S. 31 between Argos and Plymouth Wednesday morning.
The Marshall County Coroner’s Office has since identified that student as 13-year-old Owen Abbott. The coroner’s report lists his cause of death as “multiple blunt force trauma.”
There were 38 eighth-graders on the Eastern Pulaski Schools bus when they stopped at a railroad crossing as required by law. Indiana State Police say their preliminary investigation indicates the bus was hit from behind as it began to accelerate.
A 14-year-old was airlifted to the hospital. Additional injuries were reported, but are believed to be non-life-threatening at this time.
WNDU reports the students were from Winamac Community Middle School and were heading to the Wagon Wheel Theatre in Warsaw.
Toxicology results are pending for both drivers, which is required by law for vehicle operators involved in serious injury or fatal crashes. Weather is not believed to have been a factor at the time of the crash.
