The project would run fiber optic lines out to the tax increment finance district established at the beginning of the year for North Central Cooperative Inc. near Mentone. The company is investing $8.27 million to renovate two buildings on its 78-acre crop service center.
The county will advance funds for the project and be reimbursed later. Commissioners approved a reimbursement resolution as well as the interim capital improvement plan, in advance of a permanent improvement plan to be presented at a future meeting.
Also this morning, commissioners approved a $5,000 expense to be reimbursed by the state for an Emergency Management Alliance of Indiana conference. Ed Rock, county emergency management director and alliance board member, presented the request. Commissioners approved the request but indicated they would like to see other member counties take turns with funding.
And the county recognized Warsaw resident and Vietnam War veteran Lewis Eugene Collier as the veteran of the month for August. In his 26-year career as a pilot and instructor, Collier logged more than 10,000 flight hours – including 1,366 combat hours – and earned more than 60 medals, as well as being named a Sagamore of the Wabash.
He thanked commissioners and said he was receiving the honor on behalf of all veterans, and encouraged everyone on Veterans Day and Memorial Day to think about the story told by each flag over a veteran’s grave.
