Indiana is rated as the state most at risk of losing jobs to automation in a report released Thursday by the Brookings Institution.
Indiana came in at 48.7 percent to losing jobs due to automation, with Kentucky in second. The study looked at how automation and artificial intelligence technology (AI) could affect jobs.
Among cities, Fort Wayne came in at no. 67 out of 381 on the list. Elsewhere in the state, Kokomo came in second just behind Dalton, Georgia. Elkhart-Goshen has the third-highest risk of job share automation. Michigan City-La Porte is ranked 13th, Terre Haute came in 21st and Columbus is 24th. The Indianapolis-Carmel-Anderson metro area came in at no. 275.
The study concluded that automation and AI will affect “virtually all occupational groups in the future.” About 25 percent of employment have a high risk to automation in the coming decades.
Jobs most at risk are those in office administration, production, transportation and food preparation. Those least at risk include professional and technical roles with high education requirements and low-paying personal care and domestic service work.
