INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Members of an Indianapolis church scrambled to get out of the building when a fire broke out during an adult Sunday school lesson.
Some people believed the odor was from the kitchen or the furnace at Bethany Rembrandt Church. But then smoke emerged in the sanctuary. About 20 of the church’s 100 members were in the building at the time.
Authorities say the roof collapsed, causing damage worth $100,000. No one was injured. Battalion Chief Rita Reith says the fire remains under investigation.
The building was known as Greater New Hope Church when it was built in 1981. It has been the home of Bethany Rembrandt Church since 2002.
