Town Marshal Tony Ciriello’s last Syracuse Town Council meeting took place Tuesday night.
The council, with emotional speeches from both Paul Stoelting and Larry Siegel, presented Ciriello with an honorary plaque, thanking him for his many years of service. Ciriello thanked the council for the opportunity, stating that this was the best job in law enforcement he ever had.
The council then moved to accept Ciriello’s resignation and to promote Syracuse Police Investigative Sergeant Jim Layne to town marshal, starting in October when Ciriello steps down. Layne has worked for the department for 15 years, starting as a reserve officer.
In other news, the council proposed the 2016 town budget. The budget is currently estimated at $3,520,851. The estimated max levy is $1,896,369. The budget adoption meeting will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 20.
A large group of community members, led by resident Becky Fox, were present to address the creation of a quiet zone near Syracuse railways. The group looks to raise $8,500 to assess the cost of the quiet zone. Stoelting advised that the board did support the group’s effort, but could not offer counsel at this time until actual figures were presented.
According to Ciriello, there were:
• 487 calls for service in the town
• 28 written reports
• 16 property damages accidents
• 6 criminal arrests
• 3 O.W.I. arrests
•7 Juvenile arrests
• 14 traffic infractions.
