Dorothy Jones Hogan Sweeney

Dorothy Jones Hogan Sweeney, 94, of Warsaw, Indiana, passed away on Saturday October 2, 2021. Dorothy was born March 25, 1927 in Detroit MI to Charles and Mary Elizabeth (Kane) Jones. In 1948, she married Donald Hogan, who died March 16, 1986. On April 25, 1987, she married Louis Sweeney, who died June 5, 2011.

She is survived by daughter Sheila (Jim) Scovic of Lake Orion, MI and son Jerry (Sally) Hogan, Warsaw; four stepdaughters: Joann Zeisner, Lois Sweeney, Judy Sokoloff and Kathy Kramer, and stepson Mark Sweeney, as well as 9 grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter. Surviving also are sisters Janet O’Connor, Sally Keough, and Carolyn Leontos.

She was preceded in death by son Chuck Hogan and his wife Joellen (Dickey), daughter Margie Davis, granddaughter Sarah Hogan, great-granddaughter Shelby Webb, and sisters Mary Hyland, Eleanor Hinkson, Frances Distelrath, Kathleen Rudberg, and Ruth Chisolm; brothers-in-law Bernard Hyland, Bill Hinkson, Bud Rudberg, Chuck Distelrath, Bill Chisolm, Arthur Leontos, Bob Keough, John Klein, Terry Hogan, and Lee O’Connor, and sisters-in-law Maureen Hogan Klein and Darla Horgan Hogan.

Dorothy earned a Bachelor of Music from Marygrove College and a Master of Music from Ball State University. She taught music in Warsaw Community Schools for 21 years and was a real estate broker for 10 years.  She was a pipe organist and pianist in churches for nearly 80 years.

Dorothy was the Greater Warsaw Chamber of Commerce “Woman of the Year” in 1994. Knights of Columbus “Catholic Woman of the Year” in 1995, and Marygrove College Distinguished Alumna in 2014.  She was listed in Who’s Who of American Musicians.

She was past President of the Greater Warsaw Chamber of Commerce, Tri Kappa Associate Chapter, Warsaw Reading Club, American Association of University Women (Warsaw Chapter),  Secretary of the Rosary Altar Society of Sacred Heart Church, and a founding director of Warsaw Biblical Gardens.

A Visitation will be held from 4:00-8:00 PM, with a Vigil and Rosary at 7:30 PM on Friday October 15, 2021 at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday October 16, 2021 with Father Jonathon Norton officiating. Interment will be private.
