INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Historical Society (IHS) on Monday announced the students who have been selected to advance to the National History Day in Indiana (NHDI) State Contest after a successful West region contest on Saturday.
The contest included students from DeKalb, Kosciusko, Parke and Sullivan counties, according to a news release from IHS.
The list of West region contest finalists from Kosciusko County include, from Edgewood Middle School: Amara Hanson with her individual senior exhibit “The Scoop on the Scopes ‘Monkey’ Trial”; and Kevin Gough with his individual junior performance “The Unfair Treaty of Versailles.”
On Feb. 21, IHS announced the students from the Northwest region contest who were selected to advance to the NHDI State Contest. Those included, from Edgewood Middle School: Claire Temple with her individual paper “Treaty of Versailles: Helpful or Harmful” in the junior division; and Titiksha Gorhe and Eden Metz with their group exhibit “The Little New Deal: A Diplomatic Event in Indiana” in the junior division.
Approximately 48 students took part in Saturday’s contest, with finalists advancing to the 2022 NHDI State Contest on April 30 at Marian University in Indianapolis.

NHDI is a yearlong program dedicated to enhancing history education in Indiana’s schools, according to the release. Students in grades four through 12 explore a historical subject that fits under the annual theme. This year’s theme is “Debate & Diplomacy in History: Successes, Failures, Consequences.” Students use their research to create a documentary, exhibit, paper, performance or website. To reach the 2022 NHDI State Contest, students must qualify at one of five regional virtual contests.
NHDI is a project-based, inquiry-based program which encourages students to explore their own passions by conducting research, developing research questions and then exhibit their individual learning styles through the creation of exhibits, documentaries, performances, papers and websites.
