A Warsaw man was injured Friday afternoon when the moped he was driving was hit by an unknown vehicle.
David A. Rangel, 73, North Allen Lane, Warsaw, suffered minor bleeding to the head and was taken by Lutheran EMS to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne as a trauma precaution, according to the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office accident report.
The report states the KCSO was notified of the accident on West Levi Lee Road, about 400 feet west of West Edgewood Drive, Warsaw, at 4:58 p.m. Friday.
Rangel was found laying face down in a ditch on the north side of Levi Lee Road by a passerby. It appeared Rangel was laying about 6 feet away from where a red 2018 Yong Solona moped was laying, the report states.
Rangel said he did not remember what happened and could not remember where he was going.
While officers investigated the scene, it appeared that Rangel was westbound on Levi Lee Road on the moped when an unknown westbound vehicle hit the moped from behind on the left rear of the moped, causing it to run off the road and flip in the ditch on the north side of Levi Lee Road, the report states.
The damage on the moped “appeared consistent” with being hit from behind by a westbound vehicle, according to the report. It also appeared that Rangel was thrown from the moped up next to a tree. He was then found by the passerby.
A property owner on the corner of Edgewater Drive and Levi Lee Road walked over to officers and said he had a ring camera that faces the area of where the accident occurred and would try to access it. The property owner was advised to contact the Kosciusko County Central Dispatch once the video is reviewed.
Damage was estimated at $750 to $1,000 to the moped.
