Today is the federal holiday that celebrates the birthday of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. Because it’s a federal holiday, all local, state and federal government offices are closed today. Many banks and other sheninstitutions are also closed today, there will be no mail service today and some schools are also closed today. As always, if you aren’t sure, call ahead.
Members of the Committee to Commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will host the community celebration today at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center on the campus of Grace College. It will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Doors will open at 11 a.m., and box lunches will be available free of charge for the first 500 in attendance. Charles Person of Atlanta, Ga. will be the featured guest speaker for the event. Person is one of three living civil rights pioneers who participated in the original Freedom Rides to integrate interstate bus travel. Over 150 students from Kosciusko County will perform in different parts of the celebration. This event is open to the public and free of charge.
