WINONA LAKE — Four government leaders in Indiana gathered Friday for a symposium with students at Lakeland Christian Academy for a question and answer discussion over a range of issues.
Several hundred students participated in the discussion of politics, with questions such as who was your favorite president and how do you work with constituents.
But maybe the most interesting question was posed by a 12th-grade student who asked for their thoughts on woke ideology in public schools.
Those participating included U.S. Rep. Rudy Yakym, Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch, State Sen. Ryan Mishler and State Rep. Craig Snow.
Each of the four offered responses. Below is a quick recap.
Crouch said people are tired of the woke culture controlling things like the types of cars society can drive and the kind of meat we can eat.
She also blamed a two-tiered justice system where left-wing media and liberal prosecutors are targeting conservatives, “including president (Donald) Trump.”
“We have to take a stand and push back against liberal culture that is permeating every aspect of our society but particularly in our schools, and trying to indoctrinate and manipulate our young people and their minds,” Crouch said.
Yakym said Crouch’s comments highlight why the federal government should not be involved in public education.
Voters, he said, need to become more familiar with school board members when it comes to elections.
“I also believe we should have educational choice. I believe educational choice should not just be for the rich,” Yakym said.
Mishler urged students to keep in mind their small-town values.
“My definition of woke is the taking away of my God-given rights. And I just keep it simple … the scary thing is it’s not just in public school. It’s way more than public schools,” Mishler said.
“You’re going to leave here one day,” Mishler told the students. “When you get out, they will challenge you to see this other side so you have to hold firm and be strong and that’s the only way we’re gonna get over this woke movement is your generation stands firm.”
Snow took it a step further and said they need to rely on Biblical teachings.
“When you guys are in college, it’s gonna hit you hard, it’s gonna be there. What you’re learning now, take it with you, don’t waiver,” Snow said.
The event was organized by the school and a Kosciusko County Republican party leader.
