PIERCETON — Chauncey Smith was selected over two other candidates at a GOP caucus Thursday to fill the vacancy on Pierceton Town Council left after Eric Trump resigned.
Other candidates for the seat were Jerry Kreger and Gregory Chism.
Smith, 57, grew up in Warsaw and eventually moved to the Pierceton area where he spent 17 years with the Pierceton Fire Department before retiring.
He said he loves the town and wants to help make it grow.
I’m really excited and I’m ready to go,” Smith said.
The caucus drew an unusually large crowd at town hall, many of whom applauded all three candidates after each spoke briefly.
“They’re very concerned about how their town is being ran,” he said, referring to residents.
None of the candidates addressed the controversy over whether the town should participate in a sidewalk project that has drawn criticism from some residents.
Smith said he’s not ready to offer a comment on that topic.
