With more than 90 accidents involving bicycles in reported to police in the past four years, Elkhart City Council members easily passed the so-called “bike buffer” with a unanimous vote in favor. It requires drivers to give a three-foot barrier when passing bicyclists on city streets. Elkhart stats show one in five drivers took off without waiting for police after colliding with cyclists. The review also suggests that motorists were at fault in more than a third of the incidents.
