Tuesday morning’s bitter cold was record-breaking for South Bend and Fort Wayne.
The National Weather Service declared -15 the new record low in South Bend. The previous record was -11 set back in 1928.
The record low in Fort Wayne for January 2 was -8ยบ, set back in 1945. That record was broken Tuesday with temperatures around -13.
The cold is expected to continue Wednesday. Wind chills ranging from 10 below zero to 20 below zero will be seen across northern Indiana. The National Weather Service warns these wind chills can cause frostbite to exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.
The weekend will bring some warmer temperatures in the 30s.
