Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety Friday approved a $108,672 bid from Borden Waste Away for streetside recycling pick-up. The Curbside Waste Committee, which includes private citizens, was formed by the mayor to discuss possible changes to streamline and reduce the costs associated with the current solid waste and recycle programs, according to Jeff Beeler, street superintendent. It was determined there is a substantial savings to moving both the trash and recycle programs to streetside pick-up. Once the city receives the new side-loading garbage truck, both programs will switch to streetside pick-up only. There will be a six-month transition period. The yearly cost of streetside pickup is $108,672, which is a savings of $42,624 or 28 percent from alley pick-up. In 2016 there will be a few months of alley pick-up before switching to streetside. “We know this will take adaptation and adjustment, but there is a significant savings. We need to make this move to contain our costs,” Mayor Joe Thallemer said. Thallemer said this was a decision the Curbside Waste Committee gave careful thought to. The board also approved a contract between the city and Wessler Engineering for wastewater treatment plant improvements. Improvements include a new scum pit mixer, new mixing tank mixer and plant water system improvements.
