WARSAW — Kosciusko County has joined a growing number of Indiana counties establishing a burn ban as an ongoing drought and dry conditions continue to worsen.

Northern Indiana has not seen rain for more than three weeks and warm temperatures have created ripe conditions for field fires.

The local ban seeks to limit the use of campfires, burn barrels, open burning and fireworks with exceptions.

A resolution approved by the county commissioners says the county is at risk of widespread fire hazards as a result of the drought.

Kosciusko County Fireman’s Association requested the county establish the ban.

As of Wednesday, 53 of Indiana’s 92 counties, including Marshall and Fulton counties have announced burn bans.

Meteorologist Matt Rudkin forecasts dry conditions and high temperatures near 90 through Saturday.
