LAFAYETTE — Political posturing among Republicans ahead of two key 2024 races in Indiana took another twist over the weekend.
Former Indiana governor Mitch Daniels, who recently retired as president of Purdue University after ten years, has apparently ruled out a run for governor in 2024, according to a report from a longtime Lafayette reporter.
Dave Bangert reports on substack that Daniels told him he’s not interested in running for a third term as governor.
Instead, Daniels said he’s giving serious consideration to a run for U.S. Senate.
The senate seat is expected to open up in 2024 after Mike Braun announced intentions to run for governor.
Three Republicans have already declared their plans to run for governor. Those include Fort Wayne businessman Eric Doden, U.S. Sen. Mike Braun and Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch.
Nobody has formally declared plans for the Senate campaign, which became a wide-open race after Braun announced he will run for governor.
Gov. Eric Holcomb is blocked from running for re-election because of term limits.
Among those considering a run for the Senate include U.S. Reps. Jim Banks (3rd District) and Victoria Spartz (5th District) as well as Holcomb.
Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita’s name has popped up as a possibility in both races.
