Two people were injured in a two-car collision Thursday afternoon at an intersection where the traffic light had stopped functioning.
Megan Cook, 21, of Wellsburg, WV, was traveling northbound on CR 250E and approached US 30. Cook told reporting police that the traffic signal at US 30 and CR 250E was not functioning and the light was “blacked out”. Cook said soon after the light came back on as a flashing red light.
Cook advised when she got to the intersection she came to a complete stop for the flashing red signal. Cook wanted to turn left onto US 30 and entered the intersection. She did not see Frederick McKee, 59, of North Webster, coming and his 2006 Ford F150 hit Cook’s 2008 Mazda 6.
McKee advised he was traveling eastbound on US 30 near Commerce Dr. and noticed the traffic light ahead was not working. McKee said shortly after the traffic signal became a flashing red light and as he approached the intersection of US 30 and CR 250E he saw the traffic signal was a solid green light for eastbound US 30 traffic. McKee continued eastbound in the left lane of US 30 and did not see Cook coming until her vehicle had entered the roadway.
McKee tried to apply his brakes, but could not avoid a collision.
A witness at the scene stated he was traveling eastbound on US 30, behind McKee, and saw the traffic signal went from a flashing red light to a green light for US 30 traffic.
Cook had minor abrasions and cuts to her head and complained of pain to her hips and lower back area. Both driver’s side doors had to be removed from her vehicle before she could be extracted from the car. McKee experienced chest pain from the airbag deployment.
The Warsaw Police and Winona Lake Police Departments responded to the scene.
