WINONA LAKE – Winona Lake patrons and residents may have noticed barrels in the lake lately and wondered what they are.
The canals are being dredged by the Winona Lake Preservation Association and work should be finished within the next three weeks, Winona Lake Town Manager Craig Allebach said.
He said the dredging work started the first of July.
“What they do is, it’s like a hydraulic suction thing. They suck out the silt and everything on the bottom of the canal, and they pump it through a hose,” Allebach said. “So those barrels mark the hose but also keep the hose supported on top of the lake.”
He said they’re currently dredging over by Lakeview Middle School and a couple of canals in there.
“Then they pump it all the way across the lake over by the dam, and then they pump it beside the dam on land, and then it goes out to the west and crosses Country Club Road and goes way back in toward the railroad tracks and dries out.”
