UNDATED- The state of Indiana has already had more than half as many drownings this year as it did for all of 2018.

So far at least 34 people have died in public waterways this year, including a 1-year-old Saturday in Lake of the Woods near Bremen, and two people recently off the coast of Michigan City in Lake Michigan.

The Journal Gazette reports there were 53 drownings in the Hoosier State last year.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources say the best way to avoid drowning is to always wear a life jacket when you’re in the water and to make sure to go with a “buddy” …and never go around flooded or fast-moving waterways.
