The Indiana Department of Homeland Security and other partner agencies are encouraging Hoosiers to register and participate in this year’s Great Central U.S. ShakeOut, which will be held at 10:16 a.m. on October 16th. The ShakeOut is the largest earthquake drill in the Central United States. The Great Central U.S. ShakeOut is an opportunity to practice safety measures in the event of a large earthquake. At 10:16 a.m. on October 16th, participants should drop to the ground, take cover under a table or desk, and hold on to a table or desk as if a major earthquake were happening. Practicing early is the key to protecting yourself and others during an actual earthquake. The days leading up to the ShakeOut are a great opportunity to create a preparedness kit that can be used for a variety of situations, not just earthquakes. Disaster kits should include water and food for all members of a household, first aid supplies, flashlights and batteries, necessary medication, items for pets, and extra clothing.
