An Elkhart man is in trouble with the law after Elkhart County Sheriff’s deputies say he crashed into a home, then ran from the scene.
It happened around 4 a.m. on Sunday, Sep. 16.
Police say the suspect, Mario Hernandez-Veyna, 29, was traveling on County Road 13 north of County Road 24 went he off the side of the road, struck a mailbox, a telephone pole and then the home. His vehicle then burst into flames, according to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department.
Sheriff’s deputies used a K-9 to help find Hernandez-Veyna hiring in a nearby home, the sheriff’s department reported.
Hernandez-Veyna was taken to Elkhart General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A 48-year-old old man who was a passenger in the vehicle was also taken to the hospital with head injuries.
Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the incident.
