Former owner of The Car Company one of two killed in Florida gas leak

News Release

FORT MYERS BEACH, FLA. — Two men from Kosciusko County died Saturday from a gas leak in a Fort Myers Beach, Fla., home.

The two victims were Mike DeWitt, 57, the former owner of The Car Company who had a home on Lake Wawasee, and Jack Faler, also a resident of the Syracuse area.

Both were found dead after neighbors contacted emergency responders about the smell of gas at about 9:30 p.m. Saturday, according to information provided by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

DeWitt is listed as the owner of the property

Authorities believe a disconnected pool pump exhaust was the source of the gas leak, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

Faler was lying in bed in the first-floor bedroom. Dewitt was found on the third floor in a shower, the report said.

McHatten Sadler Funeral Chapels is in charge of DeWitt’s arrangements.

No further details about Faler were available.
