GOSHEN – Over 300 college presidents have signed a statement in support of a federal initiative that would allow some undocumented immigrants a way to stay in the country.
You can add Goshen College President James Brenneman to that list, according to the Elkhart Truth.
“This is both a moral imperative and a national necessity,” the statement reads. “America needs talent – and these students, who have been raised and educated in the United States, are already part of our national community. They represent what is best about America, and as scholars and leaders they are essential to the future.”
The Deferred Action of Childhood Arrivals (DACA) initiative was introduced by President Barack Obama. The bill would allow students brought to America illegally as children by their parents a way to get permission to work and remain in the U.S.
Immigrant advocates worry that President-elect Donald Trump could repeal DACA.
University of Notre Dame President John Jenkins has also signed the statement, along with Indiana University President Michael McRobbie.
