Granger Community Church has requested to add a coffee shop onto their Elkhart campus, but the idea has been shot down. The Elkhart City Board of Zoning Appeals unanimously voted on Thursday night to reject the idea. Supporters at the meeting said that the coffee shop would be a way for the church to engage the community and make more money for church endeavors. The Elkhart Truth reports critics argued that its not appropriate for a church to run a commercial business and that allowing the not-for-profit to continue would result in lost tax revenues. Staff at the planning and zoning department also concluded much the same saying they oppose commercial activity at a place of worship.
