The Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department is asking for our help.
They say that last year their communications center handled over 9 million hang-up calls! They say the vast majority of those calls originate from someone accidentally calling 9-1-1 or children playing with an active or inactive cell phone; which still have the ability to dial 911.
How can we help?
If you realize that you have accidentally called 9-1-1—and it does happen—stay on the line and let the dispatcher know that there isn’t an emergency. After a hang-up, dispatchers attempt to make contact with the caller..
If they don’t get a response, they send an officer to the address or the GPS coordinates to see if there is a real emergency or not.
