Governor Pence has declared this week as Indiana Rail Safety Week. With that, Indiana officials are partnering with railroad companies to raise awareness about the dangers of disregarding railroad crossings laws and trespassing on railroad property. The Hoosier State ranks among the top 15 states that make up nearly 70 percent of all train crossing collisions. Data from Operation Life Saver shows, last year, there were 122 railroad crossing collisions in Indiana, resulting in 50 people injured and nine fatalities. The Hoosier State had 10 trespasser deaths last year as well. Since the start of May, Indiana has seen 10 train-pedestrian deaths in St, Joseph, Elkhart, Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties.
Pence names this week National Rail Safety Week.
