Public safety officials in Indianapolis say they need money to hire more officers to stem the rising tide of violence that took the life of Officer Perry Renn last weekend.
Fraternal Order of Police Vice President Rick Snyder said at a news conference Tuesday, that Indianapolis needs to hire hundreds more officers over the next few years.
Public Safety Director Troy Riggs says the city needs to eliminate the homestead tax credit and raise the public safety tax to free up the money it needs to hire enough officers.
Riggs also says the state needs to impose mandatory minimum sentences for the use of guns in crimes. He says police are arresting the same people over and over again.
Police Chief Rick Hite says police have confiscated 870 guns this year.
