Elkhart Police are awaiting ballistics tests to determine whether an officer, or someone else, fired the shot that killed an Elkhart man this past weekend.
Two officers responded to a burglary report on Sunday, Dec. 4, in the area of Capitol Blvd. and DeCamp Ave. when they heard gunshots, nearby, then ran to the scene and opened fire on a car.
Police haven’t said what prompted officers to use their weapons.
Meantime, an autopsy has been completed on 29-year-old Norman Gary, who was found, dead inside the car, Gary died of a gunshot wound.
The manner of his death was determined to be homicide.
There will be a press conference at the Elkhart Police Department on Tuesday Dec. 6, at 11 a.m. regarding the shooting.
During the conference, Mayor Tim Neese will make a statement and Chief Ed Windbigler will identify the officers who were involved in the incident.
