FORT WAYNE — IPFW Chancellor Vicky Carwein is responding to a vote of “no confidence” issued Friday by some faculty members in the wake of announced program cuts.
The cuts are part of a restructuring plan, and include the elimination of women’s studies, geology and philosophy degree programs, while putting others on hold.
School officials cited budget cuts and dropping enrollment, but that wasn’t good enough for opponents on the faculty, who accused Carwein of damaging campus morale and creating a “culture of fear.”
She tells the News-Sentinel the school has lost 30% of its enrollment since 2011, and that while the move seems a surprise to some, it’s been discussed “for four years.” She adds that maybe more could have been done, but adds that college leadership has tried “very hard” to communicate with the campus.
