Collisions with deer are prevalent in Kosciusko County, as well as the entire state of Indiana.
According to statistics from the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department, there have been 268 total collisions with deer so far in 2015. Ten of those have resulted in personal injuries, two of which were incapacitating. KCSD handled 212 of the 268.
There were 492 deer-related crashes in 2014, with 17 personal injuries. The most collisions in recent years took place in 2013, with 543 traffic accidents.
KCSD First Sgt. Chad Hill said in an interview that because of the 24-hour patrolling duties of KCSD, officers typically are involved in three to five collisions with deer a year.
The Federal Highway Administration, in conjunction with State Farm, found that the odds of drivers hitting deer in Indiana in 2015 is 1 in 142, a 21-percent increase from 2014. The months of November into December are when accidents with deer are most likely to occur, due to mating and hunting seasons. The average cost per claim from one of the incidents in 2015 is $4,135, up 6 percent from 2014.
