Mentone OKs Hiring Deputy Replacement

Mentone Town Council Monday approved starting the application process for hiring a deputy to replace Terry Engstrand, who resigned.
The council approved Engstrand’s resignation at its Oct. 5 meeting. Approximately 30 people attended the October meeting questioning why the council decided to not fill the vacancy. At that meeting, Tim Croy, council president, said the town could not afford to hire a deputy.
During Monday’s meeting, Croy said since the October meeting he has talked to the town’s business owners.
“They are all in agreement that we need a deputy and that is the route I would like to pursue,” Croy said.
Croy made the motion for the town to accept applications for the position, seconded by Councilwoman Jill Gross.
Jim Eads, town marshal, said he and the council will review applications and the position will be advertised in the Times-Union with plans to have the position filled by January.
In other business, the town approved purchasing tires for $1,200 for the skid loader that is used for snow removal.
Chris Treber, Mentone resident, requested to send a link to the town for a website she is working on that advertises town events and has town council contact information. The council approved her request.
Jenny Holloway, Mentone resident, informed the council a Mentone Community Coming Together Facebook page was started last month.
The page has 20 members and its goal is to assist the community with tasks such as raking leaves and mowing.
“We all want what’s best for our community,” Holloway said.
