A Merrillville police officer shot in the head while responding to a call about an evicted tenant has died. 24-year-old officer Nickolaus Schultz was pronounced dead Sunday morning at an Oak Lawn hospital. He was shot Friday night. The suspected shooter, 33-year-old Michael Hrnciar died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Schultz and other officers were responding to a call about an evicted tenant who had apparently moved back into the condo. Hrnciar had been evicted back in July due to foreclosure. Governor Pence calls the death of a Merrillville police officer a reminder of the extraordinary sacrifices law enforcement officers and their families make every day. Pence says he was saddened to learn of the passing of 24-year-old officer Nickolaus Schultz, who was shot in the head Friday while responding to a call about an evicted tenant. He died on Sunday at a Chicagoland hospital.
